He was meddlesome, self-serving and downright wicked while all the time wearing the cloak of generosity and respectability. There is perhaps also a hidden Dantean reference.
He, however, is a self-obsessed, selfish individual who does not love her, any more than he loves Catherine or any of the other women in An evil streak life. This is a nasty, seriously disturbing book, a tale of deceit and manipulation, with a narrator, Alexander Kyle, who is spitefully funny, selfish and dangerous. Rather than attempting to seduce Gemma in person, he effectively seduces her by proxy by engineering an affair between her and David Meredith, a handsome but struggling actor who is supplementing his meagre earnings by working as a domestic cleaner.
Gemma Jones plays the role of as Beatrice Kyle• Okay mattew and so do i, Cuz i quite feel something unsual for you now which i can't really express so soon.
The main character is Alexander Kyle, an academic in his sixties. What could be more delicious than to corrupt her? Indeed, he is spurred on by his dislike of Gemma's husband Christopher a dislike grounded in sexual jealousy.
From childhood, she has turned to him for advice. Enter David, Kyle's part-time houseboy, an out-of-work actor who specializes in destructive liaisons with impressionable matrons.
At first these possessive indulgences are quite innocent, but when she marries a rather cold, albeit successful doctor — a man Alex actively despises — his mission becomes all-consuming.
In the earlier novel the characters never came to life, whereas in the later work Kyle the cynical, perverted control freak is a well-realised villain.
A scheming uncle leads his married niece into an affair with an out of work actor.
