Gerard is a fair, solid, comfortable, careful man who wishes his wild younger brother Sir Beauvallet Beauvallet would settle down and provide him with the heirs he and his lady lack. Most of the other characters are cardboard cutouts, but fun anyway.

The square of her bodice was cut low across her breast; a jewel lay upon the white skin, rising and falling with her quickened breath.

Beauvallet (Audio Download): Georgette Heyer, Penguin Audio: Books

CULPEPPER BEAUVALLET He is left in charge of Sir Nicholas Beauvallet's ship The Venture, when it is anchored at Plymouth Sound. Dominica is spirited, fiesty and intelligent, quick-witted and interesting - it is not hard to see why Beauvallet would fall for her so quickly. In all honesty, I would rate most of Heyer's other stories above this one. Don Juan chewed his lip, and knew a pang of remorse. Beauvallet is sailing from the West Indies when he is attacked by a Spanish ship; he defeats them and when he and his men board the Spanish ship, they find a lady, Dona Dominica de Rada y Sylva, and her Beauvallet, Don Manuel, who is very Beauvallet with a fever.

You could learn more from reading Beauvallet of her books than from one written in the time it was set! She struck at him, and he caught her hand and held it, pulled her closer, and looked down into her face with eyes a-twinkle.
