The integration of academic and vocational education is an educational reform strategy conceptualized by vocational educators, supported by the business community, and articulated by policy makers in the 1990 Carl Perkins Amendments, which require that federal money be spent on programs that "integrate academic and vocational education.
Given the lack of a legal framework to enforce certain training standards, the informality of training may also bear certain risks to the trainee, with particular concerns involving the potential exploitation of children as cheap laborers, gender discrimination based on traditional gender roles, and unenforceable contractual agreements resulting in low training quality or an extension of the apprenticeship duration ILO, 2011, 2012. Vocational educators have been criticized for promoting overly specific training and encouraging a dual structure that segregates vocational and academic education. But it is true that in Bangladesh people still prefer general education, to technical education. These include the improvement of curriculum and instruction, establishment of Thai Vocational Qualification, validation of experience, research and innovation, and career development.
Formal TVET in Ghana occurs at three levels. Accordingly, it is integrated in compulsory schooling as alternative to an academically oriented schooling track, or as part of several postcompulsory education options.
There is also a pressing need to orient students toward sustainable production; through the appropriate development of students' responsibility, their personal values, consumption patterns, and appreciation of cultural diversity; and through development of generic skills of critical thinking, team work, workplace relationships, and safety, and their ability to adapt to varying, often very demanding situations.
