The camel, later dubbed the Red Ghost, easily out paced the other camels and riders, escaping into the desert with the poor army soldier still helplessly tied to it, never to be seen again. Although an initial expedition with half those camels led by Edward Fitzgerald Beale across southern California was deemed a success, the experiment proved pretty much a disaster.
