45 In this approach, each datum is compared with others to determine similarities and differences. Thus, I selected a constructivist grounded theory approach to this research because my study aimed to understand the impact of the social model of disability on policy and practice for disabled students in work-based placements. The meaning of diverse emotions, understandings and experiences of disability emerged through interactions and discourses between me as the researcher and the research participants and as such constructivist grounded theory provided a method which enabled me to deduce genuine meaning and insight.
Theoretically relevant events, activities, and populations are all sampled, and the comparisons between these are aimed at increasing the conceptual density and integration of the emerging theory. It can deal with records which exist prior to the research and it can deal with materials specifically collected. Once gathered, the data are analyzed using coding and theoretical sampling procedures. Glaserian grounded theory, as originally described, fits within a positivist paradigm, assuming an objective external reality Charmaz, 2000.
There can be multiple forms of data, including artifacts, documents, and interview transcripts. Others tried to understand by interpreting treatment by care providers and family members.
Grounded theory and disability studies I conducted two interviews on separate occasions to gain richer data because students would have had further placement opportunities in different work contexts with different placement supervisors in each year of their study.
Theoretical saturation is the point at which additional cases no longer contribute to learning anything new about the phenomenon in question. Indeed, in a process referred to as theoretical sampling, the researcher may seek out additional cases on the basis of the potential for those cases to test, refine, or extend the generalizations.gender may be consistently essentialized than other social categories because of the evolutionary role of biological sex in mate selection and reproduction; Kenrick, 1994.
Brueggemann, Brenda Jo, Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Georgina Kleege. Grounded theory can also be used to modify existing theory or to expand on or uncover differences from what is already known.
This seminal work explained how theory could be generated from data inductively.
However, understanding how to position oneself philosophically can challenge novice researchers.
These Australian researchers have written in a way that appeals to the novice researcher.
Advanced coding that integrates extant theory adds further explanatory power to the findings.
