Photo: David Blasco Across the causeway in Jensen Beach, lovers of Old Florida will want to have lunch at the1401 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach, 772 781-5136. It is a very nicely run quirky little museum and when you go, I hope the basement is open, as it was when we were there. These free walks fill up fast, but that link includes other turtle walks nearby. Coast Guard Service through WW I.

Pretty Stuart Heritage Museum We learnt that this old and charming wooden building was once the general store for the area, and built in 1901 by George Parks who lived with his family in the top floor of the house, running the store on the first floor.
As soon as the line was secured, not as easy as one might assume and often taking several attempts, the breeches buoy would be sent out on a pulley line to rescue the stranded sailors one at a time off the wreck. Due south of the hull section is a large debris field leading to additional hull plates and the remains of a crane, probably used for loading cargo.
But that was incorrect; the House of Refuge was built first, but built on land that mistakenly later was homesteaded to the Olds. The drive there, coming from Stuart, was real pleasure.

According to the 1879 "Annual Report of the Life Saving Service" these houses of refuge along the east coast of Florida "contemplate no other life saving operations than affording succor to shipwrecked persons who may be cast ashore, and who, in the absence of such means of relief, would be liable to perish from hunger and thirst in that desolate region.
